tipping question

We bought a new mattress. Men are coming to remove the old box spring and install the new mattress and foundation. They can take an elevator to our apartment. Once they remove the old box spring, I believe they will vacuum under the old bed, with our vacuum cleaner.

Do we tip them? ( I imagine 'yes'.)

If so, how much?

Thanks in advance.

Our current mattress is a Comfortaire airbed that has lasted since 2007. The company said then that Sleep Number essentially copied their concept and grew by aggressive marketing. Macy's says they won't remove it, which is incredible to me, since it's very light. Oh, well.

We tip for stuff like that. How much is a bit of a mystery to us, so we are not much help.
We tipped $20 each person (2 men) for fairly easy stove install and removal of old one.
Tipping culture is a bit of a mystery so I will be following this thread :) great question.

We always tip as well.
$20 for carrying the new one approximately 100 ft.
I learned awhile back that most people don't tip though.
My son took a weekend & after work job delivering mattresses.

In the few months he did that, he only got tipped 3 times- even for carrying a king size to a second floor apartment by himself.

I try to remember to tip when I have these type of situations. I think $20 is adequate for most. I know someone that used to work roadside assistance for AAA. He says that most tipped, but not everyone. This was 10ish years ago and greatly helped as the hourly rate was not that high. Incentives based on time to respond/repair, etc. augmented the hourly rate.

We usually tip.

If there are two people and you only have a $20 bill is it ok to give it to them to split?

Sioon, is your new bed the same brand? We will be replacing ours pretty soon. Let me know how you like your new one.

Zebra25 - I have had both (Comfortaire and Sleep Number) and found them comparable.

If you get one, just be very diligent regarding any moisture on the bed. I.e., Do not lay a damp towel there (even for a moment), make sure spills are thoroughly dried, etc. Because it has the aired-center, the core does not breath. I did not know this until I took it apart and found mold on the inside.

I believe they have done design now to deal with that better so it is not as big of an issue when I had mine (YEARS AGO). I got wigged out when that happen and bought a traditional mattress but I would have no issues going back to either model.

Sisoon - Is your boxspring a traditional one or do you have the foundation that came with the model? I know the one I had was just connectable forms with a cover on it and it disassembled very easily and was crazy light. Ditto with those mattresses. I took it all apart and took to the curb for the garbage man and someone took it all before the trash guy even came. LOL.

I think tipping varies greatly; do what you are comfortable with.

Thanks. I was thinking about $20. I'll see how it goes; if it's looks harder than I think it will be, I may do more. This is an inner spring mattress, very firm. Sleep Number bought and killed Comfortaire, and the SNs just aren't firm enough for us.

I bought the Comfortaire online, and the seller said I could use the old box spring. We just kept the old box spring. It doesn't disassemble, nor is it that light. smile (We needed a new mattress because a spring had worked its way through the mattress cover.)

I'm not sure what I'll do with the old mattress parts. There's a market for the pump, which is quite new. One air chamber leaks; it has to be pumped up every day. The other may leak, but that may be because I no longer have the strength to correctly connect the tube that carries the air from the pump to the air chamber. I don't see much market value in them, but they may be useful for guests.

We're supposed to get the new mattress Wednesday. I'll let you know how it goes, zebra.

Buying a mattress was an ordeal. Consumer Reports reviews them, and I checked out the online version of the magazine via my public library. I was all ready to buy an Avocado which they rated to be firmer than the one we bought. Luckily there's a place near here that displays mattresses-in-boxes, and I found the Avocado to be too soft.

IOW, it's probably a fact that reviews simply do not predict how an individual person will respond to an individual product.

Thanks Evenkeel and Sisoon.

I find buying a new mattress even less fun than buying a new car. laugh
