My sweet, fluffy boy is not eating. The vets run all the bloodwork tests, and the results didn’t indicate anything wrong. But this is a cat who eats too much and he’s now lost almost 2 pounds in just a week. He’s being sweeter than ever and still seems chipper and cheerful, but something very very wrong and of course over the weekend — you get nothing from the veterinary office.

I’ve only had him since 2020 and I’ve lost my last cat after just three years as well. I’m getting very tired I’m not having my pets live very long.(he was from the pound, so we’re not quite sure how old he is but the vets said he could be anywhere between eight and 12 years old right now)

Please send Mojo or prayers or positive thoughts or whatever you got. My heart is breaking.

Is the vet going to recheck him? Are there other tests they can do? Hopefully they will find something easily treatable. Please keep us posted.

Have they checked his teeth?
Usually when a cat that is older stops eating there is a dental issue in my experience.
You can test to be sure he is hydrated by pinching the skin on the scruff of his neck if it stays tented up for several seconds that is an indicator that he is dehydrated. If it goes back down immediately he is plenty hydrated.

How is kitty doing? Any answers from the vet, yet?

My cat got worse over the weekend, but I got him into the vet first thing Monday morning. All the bloodwork showed nothing wrong and the physical exam didn’t provide any clues. It just happened that the ultrasound stenographer was going to be in my vets office that day and my vet suggested we do an ultrasound instead of x-rays to see if something was going on internally. When they were shaving his belly for the ultrasound, they discovered a huge bruise across his abdomen that he was not indicating was tender, but it was very purple. And then the ultrasound showed inflamed left kidney. So the theory is there were some kind of blunt force Trauma where he fell, or ran into some thing, and will probably never know exactly what happened. They think it will resolve itself and he’s currently on an appetite stimulant to get him back to normal.

So hopefully this damage isn’t permanent and the shame he’s feeling about walking around with half his sperm missing will also fade with time.

I won’t lie – this really tested my resilience.

I'm so glad to hear you have an answer!! It's just awful when they're sick or hurting and you don't know what's causing it. Hopefully he is on the mend!!!

Seems like lately on this site we are losing our precious, best friends way too often. I’m so very happy for you that your situation looks like it’s going to turn out with a much happier ending.

How is your kitty coming along?

I hope the vets were right about the bruise taking care of itself.

Thanks for asking, WR. He’s a little bit better but still not eating enough and still losing weight so we are going back to the doctors tomorrow.

It’s difficult because this is the cat that would eat everything and then clean the floor looking for more food. And now I have to bribe him to eat basically.

I have a trip planned next week so I’m pretty anxious. It’s hard to find a cat sitter if he has to be on medication and I don’t know how I’d be away from him . but the trip is paid for and cost thousands of dollars and three other people are counting on me, so I don’t know what I’m going to do.

Does your vet offer boarding? If so, even if it's more expensive, the peace of mind knowing that he's in good hands could be worth it.

How is your cat doing?

They did a X-ray which confirmed the inflamed kidney but ruled out cancers and things like that. So they put him on two appetite stimulants and wait two more weeks. The two appetite stimulants are working… but now he has poopy fluffy pantaloons. So a cat bath was in order along with a butt fluff trim. Good thing he is cute and sweet…But he does perk up when he eats.

One of the meds is super easy - just an ointment on the inside of his ear. The other gets squirted in his mouth. If he’s doing okay later this week with no more poopy butt issues I’ll confirm my trip. The cat sitter can give him the ointment and I think it will be okay so skip the other for two days. Fingers crossed….
