Indianapolis can be a great deal of fun. It has a world class Children's Museum (billed as "For everyone who is, or ever was, a child." It's got a great art museum, and a wonderful museum at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The center of the city's Soldiers and Sailors Monument is turned into the World's Largest Christmas Tree, with lights, horse-drawn carriages and often performing groups. The zoo is also world-class and the Eiteljorg museum of Native American art is fabulous. It's pretty easy to get around as well. The biggest downside is inclement weather.

Thanks Cat. I will have to take the train there some day and check some more things out. A friend is heading to Purdue for executive grad school.

Thanks Tush. Wonder how St Augustine fared with the hurricane. We thought of the international hostel in Miami Beach but that area is cleaning up and nasty biting shrimp thing scared me 😲

I've traveled a lot in my previous job and saw wonderful USA cities. Park City, Utah, Clearwater, Florida. But one of the most interesting places I've ever visited was for a wedding at the City Museum in St. Louis. One can spend days inside that building and not see it all! I was amazed. And St. Louis is rich in history too And the Mississippi river and the casinos, the Old Courthouse - just an interesting place to go.

I live in Sonoma and can vouch for it being a great destination.
Wineries, cheese, coastline, amazing restaurants, mild climate, beautiful hiking…
San Diego is fun, too, as is Santa Fe.

AZ is one of my go to winter trips coming from the upper midwest. We both do have family and friends there so we typically end up basing in Phx while ranging from Sonoma to Tuscon. Wife's doing one last road trip with the youngest through Tx to Phz before he heads off the college this winter break.

Going South: McAdenville North Carolina has the biggest Christmas lights display in the state of NC.
I have never been down there to NC, nor to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, but hear the latter destination is quite amazing.
Of course there is Colonial Williamsburg Virginia and holiday buffets at the Williamsburg Inn (reservations fill up fast).
North of here is Bethlehem PA at Christmas and also Hershey Park, PA. The Greenbrier in West Virginia if you like to live the high life...bring lots of money!
Just a few nearby holiday places we've looked into or in one case, been to (WV).
PS: A largely 'undiscovered' mountain getaway up in West Virginia is Pipestem State Park. The lodge was going through overdue building renovations last year, but the place is super peaceful. We took our dogs and our RV to camp there in mid-winter and we were one of 2 or 3 campers. It was great to eat lunch and dinner at the lodge and NYE, very low key and quiet. The lodge was built in the 1960's by the National Park Service, and was designed by JFK's Harvard connected architect, world-famous Eero Saarinen, so it is an unexpected International-style glass and wood multi-story lodge, sited in the middle of nowhere! 😀

Question is... are you wanting to go somewhere warm to get away from the cold? If so, I'd also consider the Florida Keys, or Sedona, AZ - if you go to Sedona, do a sunrise hot air balloon ride! Unbelievable!

great ideas everyone!!
The Gatlinburg area is really fun! I love things like the reindeer farm, the water park, and the national park. I have never been to Dollywood but the area has a great Christmas holiday season vibe!!
