It's DD's 14th birthday.
Baked a cake. Actually a double cake. In a very large pan meant for lasagna lol
Anyways went to get cake out of the oven and my arm touched the edge of the pan. Of course stupid me didn't just put it down and regrab it. Noooooooooo. I instead stood there with my hands in the oven, arm against the pan THINKING what should I do. I didnt react, I just froze.
5 seconds or so later I snapped out of it and put the cake on top of the stove then ran my arm under cool water.
The burn is about 2 inches long, an eighth of an inch wide and white. That part doesn't really hurt. All around it does. It's red around the burn. It hasn't blistered. Can I just leave it open to the air or should I cover it?
TIA
Yes I'm a wreck lol

Im not a dr, but I think leaving it open to air is good. You might want to lightly cover w breathable gauze and a burn ointment.
Medical peeps correct me if i am wrong

Well i read if it blisters and breaks then to cover it but it hasn't blistered.
The white part is actually indented and the red edges are all raised. Not very large and only painful around the white.

So burns are tricky.
Usually a first degree-second degree will hurt the most, 3rd degree burns cause discomfort and pain on edges, but a 3rd degree burn has blister, and the nerve endings are dead, it can be uncomfortable due to the blister, but the actual burn does not hurt.
Anyway if there is no blister and it's just red and hurts, then the best bet is to put on an aftersun gel with lidocaine in it to help numb it. You should leave it open to air. Usually these burns hurt for a couple days, then the dead tissue peels off in a couple more and you are left with pink healthy tissue that is tender as can be for a while, and if you happen to be one of the lucky ones like me it can keloid up and get ugly.
If it is bothering you take some OTC pain meds, keep an ice pack on it, and use the gel w/ lidocaine in it.
If it blisters then you absolutely want to cover it with a NON-Stick dressing like a telfa pad, because if it does open, or leaks it will glue the dressing to it, and that hurts worse than the initial burn to get it off. So a telfa and then wrap with gauze, if it does peel the entire blister off then you want to use something w/ zinc for burns on it, if you don't have that, Desetine the baby diaper rash ointment can work in a pinch. But after sun burn creams w/ zinc are also good, and of course good old Silvadine if you can get it OTC up there w/o a Rx is great.
Sorry you burned yourself. Been there done that don't want the tshirt.

I have no advice beyond what has already been stated. But as an ex-chef, I feel you. My arms are a criss cross of burn scars including a very nasty one from a chef putting boiling caramel on my bare forearm as a "joke" because apparently I was a woman, who knew? I also had to press my finger on a flat top once deliberately to cauterize an inconvenient cut during a particularly hectic service on Valentine's Day.
Hate burns and I am commiserating from a far.

Thanks
The top of the white line has blistered now. Still doesn't hurt. But omg the area around it hurts like mad. The edges are red, raised. I have lidocaine cream.
It's on the back side of my arm just above my wrist so setting my arm down is not happening.
I had oven mitts on too but I didn't put the left one on all the way.
One of my friends said I need to wrap myself in bubble wrap but wh pointed out I just would have melted it to my arm lol.

That should just get lidocaine/sunburn gel on it and left open to air. It should stop hurting in another 12-24 hours as those top layers of skin die off.

The edges got alot more red and the red spread out. That part still hurt. The white strip didn't hurt until today when part of the white dead skin came off exposing the pink new skin underneath. Oh man that's tender!!!
I did manage to bake another cake and cook dinner in the oven and NOT burn myself. Gotta give myself a pat on thr back for that right.
Ugh!

I hope so too.
It's right on the area where if you put your arm down on an arm rest so I can't put rest it down at all. Hurts to much to have anything touch it now.

Are you putting any zinc based cream on it?
It will be tender for a while, and often those oven burns are where we frequently hit our arms.
I hope everyone enjoyed that awesome cake.

The only zinc cream I have is penaten and I am using it.
It went from just being tender on the red edges to painful all around.
Yes everyone enjoyed the cake. I had two pieces lol

I've started doing a lot of cooking recently and got burnt quite frequently so I searched and found the best home remedy for burns is dishwasher liquid detergent. It works really well, not only it cools down the burnt down quickly so you don't feel the pain on the burn mark or around it, it also helps the burn to heal quickly with no swelling. And the best thing is that it's readily available at the sink at all time.

This is the ONLY benefit of being an adult. You can eat cake any time you want for any damn reason!!!
Any burn I've had before I didn't do much with. This one...oh my it's nasty to look at and only hurt around the actual white melted burnt skin. Now that the dead skin has begun to peel the whole damn thing hurts!
And of course I hit it off everything....
One if my FB friends from school said I need to be wrapped in bubble wrap. I said for most things yes but bubble wrap would have just melted to my arm. What I need is my own personal chef

I just remember many years ago I had an aloe vera plant which is awesome to treat burns.
just break off a small piece at the end of a leaf and squeeze the gel from the leaf onto the burn area, it will cool down the burn and prevent inflammation and I believe it also prevent bacterial infection as well, this natural remedy is proven to be better than any burn treatment cream you can get from a drug store. The aloe vera plant can also be a nice decor for your kitchen.

My parents swore by aloe vera and made me a believer. They once had a pole worker climbing a utility pole in their backyard, and he lost some sort of grip and slid down the pole, basically getting a pole version of road rash. My dad immediately gave him some aloe vera to put on his wounds, and the guy came back two days later to show my dad how much better the wounds looked.
It's messy, but if you can tolerate it, aloe vera is awesome.

I have an aloe plant too and grew up with them in my house as well. The aloe I have isn't even the vera variety- it's pulp is much waterier and no nearly as gooey as the vera's one is.
Still, DS got a massive sunburn on his shoulders the other day and I put it on him anyway to see if it would work. It did. He said it made it so he could move his shoulders without hurting and felt nice and cool.
Who knows- must be something in the whole genus that is soothing?
