Left our 4 year old maltese mix friday afternoon and returned Saturday night. Left lots of water and food and three small dog stick treats.
The treats were gone when we came home but everything else looked pretty full.
I anticipated cleaning up pee and poop. We have laminate and wood floors except in the bedrooms (which were closed off) so no big deal.
There is no pee or poop!
I took him out and he peed when we got home. Then he peed in tge bathroom not long after, and pooped in the laundry room. (He usually poops in the laundry room. He doesnt poop around humans 
)
Is that normal for a dog to not eat or drink or go potty when their humans are gone? And then go when they are back?
He was so happy to see us!!

He probably freaked out so much that he couldnt eat and couldnt poop/pee. Ever get so stressed you forget to eat?
Is there any way you could have a friend or neighbor look after him if youre going to be gone more than 8hrs or so? We are really lucky our neighbor (who loves our dog as her own) comes by during the day when we are gone. Overnights, my friend takes her because our dog tires out her puppy so her elderly dog can get some peace.

Absolutely normal for my boxer. There are a lot of music calming videos for dogs on YouTube. I play for my boy when I go to work and he just naps all day. Merlin's realms is the name of one channel off the top of my head. He just loves it and it's part of our routine. 🥰🐾

I will second asking a neighbor to let him out if you are going to be gone longer than 6-8 hours.
If you don't have a neighbor, my daughter has used a dog walking app. She hired a dog walker through the app and scheduled her when she needed her.
I'm guessing he was too upset to eat. Dogs don't like to be alone and that was a very long time. I can't imagine how he held his poop and pee all that time.

Poor guy! I never even thought hes care. Hes like a cat and likes to jump on the table and push things off to get attention 🤣. We said hed be glad to get rid if us and have the place to himself

My grandmother trained her Llas Apso (sp?) To use a litter box. Only was an issue when she moved in with u and he decided my cats litter boxes were now his. We had to reschedule him thst he had his and the cats had theirs.

Gently, kennel a dog for over 24 hours? 
Or Place him in a kennel overnight? I might have misconstrued your post.
Please get a neighbor/friend/dog walker to let your dog out several times while you are gone.
Cats can be left alone overnight or for a couple of days. Dogs need to go outside to relieve themselves. Your dog is trained to do his business outside, and he held it in for over 24 hours which could be detrimental to his health.

I'm hoping this means you'll board him (put him in the kennel) - not that you'll crate him for an extended period of time.
I do agree that 24h is a very long time for a dog to be left to his own devices. They are social creatures and they do miss their human pack when they're gone.

Agree with others that a dog should NOT be left alone for that long. Honestly, I know people who, if they knew about that kind of treatment, would report an owner to authorities.
We have started using a service called Rover. They provide anything from daily walks, to house sitters who stay in your house and take care of your dog, to providing their own homes for boarding. We've now used the same girl for three different getaways, and will hopefully use her for two weeks this summer when our daughter has her baby and we go to visit. Their sitters are screened very thoroughly. We have them come stay at our home because it also provides a little security, that someone is here most of the time, and there's not an empty house. She does come and go throughout the day, but never leaves him alone for more than 3-4 hours. We have Ring cameras, so get notifications when someone comes and goes via our front door - we did tell her that we have outside cameras which notify us of activity, so she knows.

Yeah, I will make a day trip and leave my dogs home but I've never left them for that long or overnight. I agree that next time you have someone check on him a few times. That's just too long alone.
I'm glad your dog was ok and back to normal.

Oh my gosh! I had no idea it was that bad a move. 
By kennel i mean place that watches dogs… NOT crated… we are out of town this summer for two weeks and have a place for him then. (Our dog groomer keeps dogs)
We dont even have a crate for him anymore. He has the run of the house. I totally thought leaving him was ok, we even have the echo where you can drop in and see him… we did that and he looked ok.
Man, I feel like a heel! He is however, snuggled next to me about to go to sleep. So he has forgiven my ignorance.

Yes. Board him. NOT put him in a crate. 
Ugh . I feel like such an a-hole!! Poor baby. I didn’t realize I was messing up that much. Ugh. Hate that he was sad.
