Question about virus alerts

In my old age, I am becoming very skeptical. I am lying, I guess, because I have always been skeptical.

Anyway, I play a game on my iPad every day, and I am constantly getting "WARNING!" popping up on my screen. It says that my memory is full and that I need to "clean up" my photos or something. Then, miraculously, they just happen to connect me with an app that will do this for me. I just ignore it because I imagine they are just wanting me to PAY for whatever app they are pushing.

Now, on my phone I just got a big ALERT saying that I have picked up some kind of virus or something from a website I was on and I should get some app to clean it up before someone steals all my info/pictures. And I just need to click on this app to take care of that.

First of all, I have no idea if I am really having those issues. But even more of a fear is that if I click on whatever apps they offer me, it is actually some thing that will threaten the integrity of my devices even more.

Can someone who is well-versed on these matters let me know if I should take my telephones advice, or if they are just trying to mess with me?

Thank you.

I wouldn't click on any pop ups at all. Most are viruses in and of themselves.

What type of phone are you using?

I have an android and in my settings is a scan option to look for viruses and malware etc.

Until someone more tech savvy comes by I'd just avoid the pop ups.

Yeah, I have not been clicking on them. I have simply ignored the warning and either swiped it away, or completely turned my phone off and restarted it.

I have an iPhone.

But every now and then, I worry that it is an actual function of my phone warning me of something that’s really happening. I just don’t know how to tell the difference. 😏

Those are scams. Ignore them.
But it is a good idea to use a scam checker.
But yeah, those that pop up come from shady websites and games.
You are right to be skeptical of them.

They are fakealert-AV. Typically javascript code loaded either from a compromised or malicious site or one of the advertisers. Safe to ignore. Closing the browser makes them go away sometimes. Sometimes they are able to change the browser settings, especially if you click on the warning buttons. Resetting the browser settings to default will fix that. Also many times the browser will reopen tabs from previous settings and that will resurrect it also.
