WH moved out 4 months ago (this is the 4th time he's been unfaithful that I know of)... I used to joke that he has a "6th sense" because he detects dishonesty quickly and was known at his former retail job as the guy who quickly picked up on thieves... I now realize it's more of a "takes one to know one" kind of thing vs. a gift. wink Anyway, recently a friend suggested that he might have set up hidden cameras or tracking devices. I've searched my car pretty thoroughly inside and out (although I'm not entirely sure what I'd be looking for!) and I've disabled my dashcam for now, in case he loaded the app for it to his phone, but I'm wondering if there are ways to be sure nothing has been planted in my car or my house? I don't have anything to hide particularly, but I want my privacy, and I just don't think this way... I'd appreciate advice!

Long Holiday period - won't be many readers online

Google "bluetooth and/or wi-fi signal detectors" and you should get hits pointing you at devices that can pickup and trace wireless devices. some not so $$$ but I can't vouch for their capability. I do know "professional" stuff exists & the technology works.

If a camera is wired, you should be able to search it out yes? I mean a wire not in an normal spot?

Worst (!!) case is a camera that is battery powered and stores on local flash (memory card) - only way to find those is
physical search - and that can be a real chore as some of them are the size of cube of sugar! Also, cameras can be bought that are hidden in "everyday" objects like "AC electrical outlet" or an Alarm clock or ??? - - possibilities endless.

Just curious - why are you worried your yahoo wants to video spy on you?

Have fun searching!

Side note -

Bluetooth is short range - typically less than 50 feet - wireless? Well wireless can go several hundred feet under certain conditions.

Then there is "professional" hardware "unlicensed 5GHz" band radio connected devices - they are not so small and cost $$$.

Then there is THIS!! - a camera pointed at your house OFF the property! Like a neighbors device. Or something in a parked vehicle. Or something "cleverly" hidden somewhere off your or even IN your bushes.

Sorry to post such negative info about finding spy cameras -

A good PI could probably "sweep" your home and car for devices using good equipment for a fee much lower than the cost of said equipment. Add to that their professional experience and knowledge.

You can't prove a negative so there's no way to know for sure. You can attack the ability of accessing the data. Make sure you have cameras of your own so you know he's not retrieving it in person. Make sure you've changed the wifi password on your home network. Check the router logs and identify devices attached to wired and wireless networks. Those two things will cut everything but devices with cellular modems. Hidden cameras can be found with infrared strobes. The light bounces off the lens and it filter of the cameras. With physical access ruled out you can eliminate battery powered devices. It's much easier to find devices plugged into outlets or network jacks by tracing the cord. Do some searches for nanny cams, hidden cameras, and audio recording devices to get an idea of how they're available.

Other than hire specialized security services there is only so much you can do to eliminate reasonable doubt.

If the camera isn’t connected (wired or wireless) then he needs access to get the data. Does he have access to the house? Does he still have a key? Changing locks is dead easy and generally only requires 15 minutes of research on Youtube and a Philips screwdriver. Even if he’s registered to the home, you can change locks on the pretext you lost a marked keyring and that he can contact you if he needs access.

The camera might be connected to the phone-network, but then he needs to power it. Search each and every outlet and see what’s connected. On the off-chance he’s direct-connected it to power then look for cables running from lights to some unexplained area. I however doubt he would spend the money and do the work to go that far. A battery operated camera would require recharging every couple of days.

Unless he has an unlimited budget this could be 1-2 cameras. Look in the most likely areas. He won’t spend money installing a camera or bugging device in the garage or kitchen, but more likely in the living room and possibly bedroom.

Do you have a security system? Is it accessible offline or outside the home? Like can he log in? If so look up how to change passwords.

As mentioned you can get $$$ devices that do a good and detailed job, but you can also get free software that does a good-enough job. You can even probably log on to your router and see what’s attached. If you don’t have the technical ability and the router is provided by the ISP their hotline can help. Might even be enough to reset the password (my suggestion: mySoontobeexHusbandhasa1inchmicrodick)
Look at your router. Any ethernet cables you don’t know the function of? A quick and easy way to discover the function is simply to disconnect. Disconnect cable A and the Internet disappears = that’s the one that connects the router to the provider. Disconnect cable B and the TV signal goes = that’s the one that provides TV. Disconnect cable C and nothing happens… might be a camera. Leave it disconnected.

Comparable advice for bugging equipment. Even the best needs to be connected to power or replaced regularly to recharge. Do you really think he’s snooping around your vehicle with the spare-keys every second day to switch bugging equipment?

It’s highly unlikely that he’s bugged or is tracking the vehicle. Unlike movies where the suave spy simply clips a coin-size disk under the fender it’s a lot more work. For one you need access to power, so when fleet-cars have monitoring installed it requires rewiring. Do a detailed but reasonable search of your vehicle. Don’t forget to search in the pockets behind the driver and passenger seats.

We have had comparable issues here on this forum. In that case it turns out the husband still had access to phone-records online as well as location tracking on an old computer. Go change all your passwords and turn off location services. Maybe even a factory reset on your mobile.
What about old computers, phones and pads? Any chance he still has one?
Change PW on all accounts, networks, devices…

Wow... great information, thank you everyone! I do agree that he's not likely to go to the expense and effort of some of these options. I have changed all PC passwords, my only other device is my phone, unless you count the kids' Chrome book that never leaves the house. If I leave town I've already determined that every possible access to my personal life will come with me (PC tower even, etc). I have been systematically "gutting" the house, re-painting rooms, etc. (this is totally unrelated to the security issue, just a way to expend energy in a positive way) which means pulling off outlet covers and removing things from walls, and I have found nothing suspicious. I also have nothing to hide, like I said, unless he's determined to catch me yelling at the kids occasionally... rolleyes Thank you for all of the suggestions!
