Things to say to stop unwanted conversations

I was st a grocery store and you know how the checker always try’s to make conversation, lame conversations with you? I was in line and the checker smiles and asks “so how are you?” I replied well it’s another day I haven’t stuck a pistol to my head and blew my brains out. All conversation stopped then and he didn’t even look at me after that. He didn’t even say thank you or good bye. I think maybe he shouldn’t be a psychiatrist Or a comedian. I could think of a million jokes for that and at least two pieces of advice for that. Sick yes. Funny yes. Conversation stopper..... on yeah. I don’t expect many answers on this but it was funny at the time. Anyone got something funny that can stop unwanted chatter?
