Have a hotel for first days in munich, Germany. Then we travel east for a few days and come back to munich.

Dont have the hotel for the last 2 days of the trip

What is a great place/ good hotel in munich. It could be an "experience" hotel, as some of us will be resting lots and might spend a lot of time in the hotel

My brother lived in Munich so visited often though he returned home a good long while ago but we've been back several times to visit friends. Only stayed in a hotel on arrival in Munich (basic and near the station but a good standard) for a couple of nights then went down to Lake Konstanz to stay with friends - fabulous area. Also camped in the Bavarian mountains. It depends on your interests - I'm a history freak so wanted to do the war tour and old city tour on my first trip to Munich.

Germany is a fabulous country and the people are so friendly and helpful. We've toured as far north as Bingen (Niederwald statue/Germania was wonderful- the chair lift was something else!). Last trip to Germany was just Berlin, my most favourite city on earth, well of those I've visited. I wouldn't go sky high with prices unless you really want luxury as there are plenty to choose from at a reasonable price. A word of caution, Munich wasn't the same the last time I visited, it's very overcrowded now and like any major European city, you have to be careful with personal belongings. Enjoy smile

Me - 58 and doing great, alone.

I love visiting Germany but I didn't care for Munich at all and I'm not sure why. I was traveling by train so I just stopped at the info desk in the train station for a hotel recommendation but I was only staying 2 nights and just needed cheap and clean.

I've really liked using Booking website and you can compare various features of the hotels and go from there. I think the reviews are from actual customers so I think they're pretty reliable. I've used them several times with great success.

Another option would be Garmisch-Partenkirchen; very picturesque and a little more laid back. We went up the mountain and wandered around and loved that even though I had to get onto a chair lift which is usually not on my to-do list ever.

Another great place to visit is Heidelberg and the couple of castles. The history there is fascinating and it's beautiful as well.

Nearby is the Village of Ilvesheim which is very quaint, cute and laid back. A great place to spend a couple of slow days. Near that is a village where the "downtown" buildings are still from the 15th & 16th centuries. It's amazing. I can't remember the name of the village but I'll find out if you're interested. It might be Ladenburg. There are still cuts in the brick/cobblestone streets for the sewage to run off. The town has something to do with Karl Benz - there's a statue or something in their town square about him.

But the main thing I wanted to tell you is don't stress over it at all. Germany is a great place to travel and I encourage you to keep your plans loose because you might see something you want to do more than what you already have planned. It's very simple to get around Germany by train and it's a great adventure to just get on the train and go and get off when something looks interesting.

Oh dear, I wish prices weren't so high cuz now I want to go back for another visit!
